FUJIFILM Europe delivers 4 K UHD optical technology to the Vatican Television Center

The Vatican Television Center (CTV) was created in 1983. In November 1996 it was officially recognized as an organization fully associated with the Holy See. The principal aim of CTV is to contribute to spreading the universal message of the Gospel by using television to document the Pope’s pastoral ministry and the activities of the Apostolic See. The main services offered by CTV are the following: live broadcasts, production, archiving, and daily assistance to other broadcasters. Every year CTV conducts around 130 live broadcasts of events inside the Vatican (the Angelus, the Pope’s General Audience and other events or celebrations). In addition there are the live broadcasts associated with the Holy Father’s trips in Italy and abroad*.

On this special occasion the “Centro Televisivo Vaticano” (CTV) produced the “Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy” which is a major event in the Catholic Church, which commenced with the “Feast of Immaculate Conception” on 08.December, 2015 with the opening of the “Holy Door” (porta sancta). All four Papal Basilicas in Rome have such a holy door. The holy door is a symbol for those who enter will receive mercy and forgiveness’. Numerous cathedrals and churches around the globe have also opened their holy doors to the public during the twenty-seventh (27th) holy year.

The opening ceremony from the St. Peters Basilica was broadcasted live to a global audience; the ceremony was covered by eight (8) Sony HDC-4300 cameras in combination with a total of eight (8) 4K UHD Fujinon lenses (3x) UA80x9 (9-1440mm) and (5x) UA22x8 (8-352mm) lenses positioned in and around St. Peters Basilica. In addition, to seven (7) Sony F-55 cameras with PL-mount 4K Fujinon ZK-Series lenses (range up to 300mm).

Mr. Stefano D’Agostini (Technical Director – CTV) comments: “After closely following technological advancements in recent years; CTV decided that it was time to upgrade its outside broadcast acquisition infrastructure to the new 4K UHD format in light of the “Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy”. Our target is to provide the best viewing experience to our global audience. This can only be achieved with cutting edge acquisition technology. That’s why CTV selected 4K 2/3” Sony HDC-4300 cameras and 4K Fujinon UA80x9 & UA22x8 lenses which have a very high dynamic range (HDR) which contributes to the desired look and image purity which is essential in 4K HDR broadcast productions.
Mr. Djamel Djadi (Regional Sales Manager-Fujifilm) stated: “We feel honored to have been part of this prestigious project. The cooperation with CTV and Sony Italy was more than excellent. As we delivered the most advanced optical technology with the most attractive after sales-service package”

The UA80x9 (9-1440mm) with OS-TECH (optically stabilized) and UA22x8 (8-352mm) next generation 2/3-inch 4K UHD broadcast zoom lenses with 16-Bit encoders are compatible with 4K cameras. The applied EBC coating (electron beam) and “floating focus systems” which control multiple lens groups according to the shooting distance, delivering high-resolution, high dynamic range images thru the entire focal range, from close-up to infinity; enabling 4K HDR video production with a realistic visual sensation with premium picture quality.

Fujifilm will continue to tap into its optical, high precision forming and assembling technologies that have been nurtured over many years to develop and supply innovative products that address the diversifying needs of broadcasting production. UA80X9-BE

World’s first launch of 2/3″ U-HDTV broadcast zoom lens “FUJINON UA80x9”, compatible with 4K cameras*1 Powerful 80x zoom for exceptional performance in live coverage of sporting events and concerts

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) has announced the world’s first*1 launch, in July, of broadcast zoom lens that offers exceptional optical performance for use with 4K cameras. The latest release, “FUJINON UA80x9” (hereinafter “UA80x9”) is a 80x zoom lens that covers a broad range of focal lengths from 9mm in wide angle to 720mm in telephoto, making it ideal for the live coverage of sporting events and concerts.

The market needs for 4K video contents are surging amidst a (7) seven-fold year-on-year increase in the shipment of 4K-compatible television sets to approx. 11.6 million units*2 last year, and the launch of a dedicated 4K channel (CS satellite broadcasting) in Japan in March this year. Fujifilm’s lineup of cine lenses has included the “HK series”*3, which offers optical performance approximating to 8K systems, and “ZK series”*3, which combines 4K optical performance and electric drive units*4. With solid reputation not only from the film industry, but also from broadcasters producing 4K contents, lenses in both “HK” and “ZK” series are frequently used in test 4K broadcasts for international sporting events. However, the broadcasting industry generally uses cameras equipped with a 2/3-inch sensor including 4K cameras with the same sensor size, and is therefore seeking compatible broadcast lenses that deliver advanced optical performance.

“UA80x9”, is a broadcast zoom lens compatible with 4K cameras. Using the cutting-edge optical simulation technology, the lens achieves an impressive 80x zoom as well as advanced optical performance such as high image resolution, contrast and color reproduction. Covering the focal length from 9mm in wide angle to 720mm in telephoto, the lens features a unique “optical stabilization mechanism” that provides optimum adjustment to image shakes caused by vibrations and wind, making it an excellent choice in live coverage of sporting events and concerts. The “floating focus system”, which controls multiple lens groups according to the shooting distance, delivers high-resolution and high-contrast images from close-up to infinity, enabling 4K video production with a high realistic sensation and premium picture quality. With the demand for accurate focusing needed for 4K resolution, Fujinon’s new focus position demand unit*5, the EPD-31A, has improved from 12 bit to 16bit encoding.

IF DESIGN AWARD 2015

IF Logo

Fujifilm receives prestigious iF DESIGN AWARD 2015 for the development of its Fujinon ZK12x25 4K Cine Zoom Lens.

For over 60 years the “iF DESIGN AWARD” has been recognized the world over as a label of design excellence. The iF logo is an internationally established symbol identifying outstanding achievements in design.

We are thrilled to announce that our ZK12x25 Cabrio 4K Cine Zoom Lens has received the prestigious iF DESIGN AWARD 2015 and that we are amongst the winners of the renowned iF label. The number of competitors was huge; as the international high-profile jury assessed almost 5,000 entries from 53 countries in order to determine who would receive this coveted seal of excellence. Our ZK12x25 Cabrio) 4K Cine Zoom Lens was entered in the discipline Product – category Audio/Video. More international than ever before: the eminent jury, with 53 experts from 20 countries, met in Hamburg from 20 to 22 January. A total of 4,783 contributions from 2,102 participants from 53 countries was submitted to this year’s iF DESIGN AWARD. The international jury of experts awarded the iF Label to 1,629 contributions: 1,124 in the Product discipline, 102 in Packaging, 264 in Communication, 96 in Interior Architecture and 43 in Professional Concept; a total of seventy-five (75) iF gold awards were presented for exceptional design quality.

Head juror Mr. F. Frenkler: “These days, a jury has to be very international – only in this way can we deal with the wide variety of international parameters of the submissions. It is striking that, in every design discipline, it is very tempting to orient yourself to the design benchmarks of the corresponding branch, not daring to do something new, which is unfortunate. In general, we are trying to slow down the developments.

In this way, we can once again concentrate on what is really important in design – such as creating products and interfaces that are easy to understand and intuitive to operate, creating a product DNA as well as specifying it in the CD of the company, thus setting the company off from its competitors. However, the goal is not to strive for diversity at any cost – the best thing that can be offered to the users is good and understandable design within the areas of products and communications, and not simply just adding new functions.”

The all-new ZK12x25 offers the industry-leading zoom ratio of 12x to cover the most frequently-used 25mm wide angle to 300mm on the telephoto end. With its advanced optical performance supporting 4K cameras, the lens delivers premium image quality across a versatile range of shooting scenes. The ZK12×25 features high-precision large-diameter aspheric elements, designed with Fujifilm’s proprietary cutting-edge optical simulation technology.
